Letter from India: A FEW THINKINGS ABOUT MY GURU ON 2565 VESAK DAY (2021)

Dear holy Guru,

I bow my head before Lotus feet of Guru.

I bow my head before Lotus feet of Guru.

Though I am very far from Guru, I always feel him in my heart and his blessings push me to meditate more. The more I practice dharma, the more grateful and lucky I feel when I am one of his learners. I would like to express my thoughts on the day of Guru’s day and Vesak day.

Guru and Tantra Upatissa

India people has been experienced the most difficult time, facing and fighting with covid 19. No one knows about the future and everyone urges to have a way out of this horrible situation. There is a saying that “a friend in need is a friend indeed”. However, we have been weakened by adverse circumstances, suffering from dangerous disease, severe pandemic, poor health, coping with depression and even the death, no worldly friends can help us, even our parents cannot do anything. Money, houses, luxurious cars, gold, silver, and our precious stones cannot protect us from covid 19. Take a very simple example, if someone is asked to pay millions of dollars or even billions of dollars to get free from this dangerous coronavirus disease, I believe that hundreds of people, even millions of people are ready to pay for it. Unfortunately, no one and nothing can help us, then money, material things, rich relatives, our loved ones have no way to help us. We really walk alone on this journey with our own karma. In Karmavibhanga Sutra wrote that “Beings evolve through karma, take birth because of karma, enjoy and (function) through karma.” Facing with the death, the dangerous disease, all materials things are nothing. It is not by chance, master Gyalse Tokme Zangpo wrote in “The thirty – seven practices of all the Bodhisattvas it goes: Life-long friends and relatives must eventually bid farewell. Wealth accumulated with sweat and tears must eventually abandon. Consciousness, a guest who lodges in this body, must eventually depart. Not attach to this life. That is the practice of all Bodhisattvas.”

master Gyalse Tokme Zangpo wrote in “The thirty – seven practices of all the Bodhisattvas it goes: “Life-long friends and relatives must eventually bid farewell. Wealth accumulated with sweat and tears must eventually abandon. Consciousness, a guest who lodges in this body, must eventually depart. Not attach to this life. That is the practice of all Bodhisattvas.”

In this dark time, only Guru with the path to enlightenment can help us out. Fistly, A Guru is absolutely necessary for every practitioner in the spiritual path. It is only the Guru who will find out our defects. The nature of egoism is such that we will not be able to find out our own defects. Just as a man cannot see his back, so also he cannot see his own errors. He must live under a Guru for the eradication of his evil qualities and defects.

In this dark time, only Guru with the path to enlightenment can help us out.

The practitioner who is under the guidance of a Master or Guru is safe from being led astray. Satsanga or association with the Guru is an armour and fortress to guard us against all temptations and unfavourable forces of the material world. Therefore, master Atisha said that:

“The best spiritual friend is one who attacks yours hidden faults.

The best instructions are the ones that hit those faults.

The best friends are mindfulness and vigilance.

The best incentives are enemies, obstacles, and sufferings of illness.

The best method is not to fabricate anything.”

And he reminds all practitioners that “Friends, until you have obtained enlightenment, the spiritual teacher is needed; therefore depend upon the holy spiritual teacher. Until you fully realize the nature of voidness, you must listen to the Teaching; therefore listen closely to the precept of the teacher. Merely understanding the Dharma is not enough to become enlightened, you must practice constantly” and If you practise with great devotion, results will arise immediately, without your having to wait for a long time.” Because “all happiness comes from the blessings of your Spiritual Guide, therefore always repay his kindness.”

“The best spiritual friend is one who attacks yours hidden faults.”

To those who practice the Dharma a long time ago, if we had been under the control of our Guru’s from that time forth, we would have achieved many realizations by now. We could have realized the guru devotion, renunciation, boddhichitta and emptiness; we could have received realizations of tantra, we could have been totally liberated from samsara. We might even have become enlightened. At the very least, we would have received some realizations, But none of this happened because we not opened our hearts to our Guru.

Because of this mistake, our minds are totally devoid of any realization whatsoever.
Below are attituded that one should follow towards Guru devotion:

  1. Thinking of the importance of the qualified guru, I will allow myself to enter under his control. May I be like an obedient son,1acting exactly in accordance with the guru’s advice.
  2. Even when maras, evil friends and the like try to split me from the guru,
May I be like a vajra, inseparable forever.
  3. When the guru gives me work, whatever the burden,
May I be like the earth, carrying it all.
  4. When I devote myself to the guru, whatever suffering occurs,
May I be like a mountain, immovable.
  5. Even if I have to perform every unpleasant task,
May I be like a servant of the king, with a mind undisturbed.
  6. Having abandoned pride, holding myself
Lower than the guru, may I be like a sweeper.
  7. May I be like a rope, joyfully holding the guru’s work,
No matter how difficult or heavy the burden.
  8. Even when the guru criticizes, provokes or ignores me,
May I be like a dog, never responding with anger.
  9. May I be like a ferry boat, never upset
At any time to come and go for the guru.
(The Nine Attitudes of Guru Devotion by The Nine Attitudes of Guru Devotion)

The Guru Puja and other tantric practices explain that by making an offering to even one “pore” to the guru, you accumulate more merit than you would by making that offering to all the buddhas of the past, present and future and the buddhas of the ten directions.
Therefore, when it comes to creating extensive merit, there is no more powerful merit field than your virtuous friend. That’s why Nagarjuna said, “Abandon all other offering. Make offerings to only your guru. By pleasing him you will attain sublime wisdom, the state of omniscience.”

On this special occasion, I would like to express my deep gratitude to Guru, who gives me the new life full of happiness and it is Guru who gives me strengths to walk on the path of enlightenment with confidence. With Guru’s permission, I have a wonderful chance to practice Pure Mind Yoga, which brings me the new life with the blessing of Guru.

Tantra Upatissa.

From the bottom of my heart, I pray for Guru’s health and longevity for the sake of all beings.

May all sentient beings get the blessing of spiritual friends to get free from suffering and its cause.

May Covid 19 pandemic end soon.

Om mani padme hum

Namo Buddhaya dear Venerable Dhamma Guru,
Thousands of candles can be lightened from a single candle & the life of the candle will not be shortened like our Dhamma Guru.
I thought, the Buddha, the Dhamma, the Sangha, the Guru should always be treated with respect in any kind of situation.
Thank you so much for providing this beautiful article to read here. I am also agreed about the necessity of of the Guru in every situation in this modern world known as Saha world. I want to mention here that, there is a difference between the Guru & the Dhamma Guru. Guru is the teacher also who provides knowledge only. But here in Buddhism Guru is the Buddha, Guru is the Dhamma, Guru is the Sangha, Guru is the glorious Vajradhara. Our holy Guru makes us wise, our Guru explains ourself & our nature to us.
On this most important day to celebrate the birth, enlightenment & the Mahaparinibbana of the enlightend one,the Buddha I wish a very very happy Buddha day to my Venerable Dhamma Guru & my all Dhamma friends.
Thank you so much Dhamma Guru.
    Your’s

Let the Guru live long and all the sentinel beings have the peacefulness and calmness attained by Buddha.

  18. TantraMikaya Jane Blechstein says:

Dear holy Gur. For this year’s Vesak Festival I would like to thank you for your tireless dedication to teach us the Dharma. With all your wise articles you accompany us practitioners worldwide. The national and global initiative in Buddhism, which is committed to a peaceful, humane, environmentally friendly and just way of life, motivates worldwide and me with all my heart to be faithful and devoted to the Dharma. I am grateful and proud that we can follow the Dharma worldwide. You are a great teacher and inspirer who teaches us the Dharma with devotion and wise knowledge. In the age of digitization, it is possible for all of us to be connected. Thanks to everyone who made such an encounter possible in the first place, whether in wise articles or in online seminars. It also teaches me that we are so closer to each other that we can walk the path of enlightenment together. The Buddha’s DHARMA is more than mere culture, it is not just “written tradition”, but above all “inner knowledge”. The main message of the Buddha is that we are all caught in a vicious cycle of suffering that arises from a fundamental, innate self-delusion about the nature of reality. Suffering here means “bondage”, bondage to shape one’s own fate. Greed, hatred and illusion throw us again and again into innumerable senseless existences, which let us experience again and again that there is nothing permanent and no permanent happiness. However, when the causes of suffering are recognized and overcome, there is a state of absolute peace and absolute desirelessness. Dear holy Guru make it possible for us to follow you and to absorb your knowledge in us and to work on ourselves. True happiness comes from us and our actions for the benefit of all. You holy Guru embody all of this for me and my deep thanks go to you and the Sangha. The capacity for enlightenment is already present in every human being. The way there leads through independence and personal responsibility. You our holy Guru teach us all this with your venerable devotion and it is our task to follow your teachings. You holy Guru help your students to drive away the spiritual darkness, to accumulate knowledge and to walk the path of enlightenment. I bow deeply to you. May our holy Guru life long for the sake of all sentient beings. May all beings achieve the Happiness of Buddhas nature. May all be healthy and happy and be successful to follow the Dharma 🙏🙏🙏

      Dear Tantra Mikaya,
Thank you very much for your kind words. I am happy and proud to see how you have been progressing tremendously throughout the years. I totally agree with you that Dharma is not just “written tradition” but also “inner knowledge”, which I have always emphasized in my teachings that “transforming the mind in the right track of Dharma is the main objective”. I am happy and proud that you have shown a good example of a Buddhist practitioner who achieved both. You expressed good understandings of my teachings, reflected your understanding concisely on daily practices, and shared meaningful lessons. I believe that by your pure faith, devotion, and good deeds, you will definitely fulfill your legitimate wishes. I am motivated to do my best for the benefit of all sentient beings no matter how many obstacles thanks to good and faithful disciples like you. May you have good health and keep practicing Dharma diligently. I hope you will read and learn more. I am looking forward to reading your comments more in the future.
      Om mani padme hum.
