Letter to Disciples No.263: Another shocking discovery relating to the Yulanpen Sutra. (Thêm một phát hiện chấn động liên quan đến ngụy kinh Vua lan bồn)

Dear disciples,

In his research about the fallacies and deceitful origin of Yulanpen, one of many “sutras” created by Chinese fake-monks, Mật Hạnh Giác found a “scripture” among Taoist texts. Its title was translated (by Mật Thuận Tâm) to “Thái thượng đổng huyền linh bảo tam nguyên huyền đô đại hiến ngọc kinh” in Sino-Vietnamese, or “Taishang (Laojun)’s Marvelous Mythical Scripture—the Grand Offerings in Dongzuan Lingbao Canon” in English.

Not to mention which one was written first, the similarities in layout and teachings coexist in these scriptures strengthen the argument that Yulanpen sutra is fake. Here are some notable details:

1/ Referring as a “Marvelous scripture” yet this scripture’s author is unidentifiable, similar to “Investiture of the Gods,” a Taoist novel.  This lack of authenticity disparages the writing, like an anonymous letter no one believes.

2/ In this work, Daode Tianzun is described as a disciple of Yuanshi Tianzun. Such a silly mistake of the impostors! According to Taoist texts (including “Investiture of the Gods”), Daode Tianzun and Yuanshi Tianzun, along with Tongtian Jiaozhu, are fellow disciples under Master Hongjun Laozu.

When even the characters get switched and confused,  the rest of the writing is nothing but a pile of spiritual trash, unworthy of its title, “Marvelous scripture.” Likewise, in the Yulanpen Sutra, when the introduction contains false details of the setting, both the time and location, the following pages are merely displays of lies and deceptions.

3/ The introductions of both “scriptures” have significant similarities. Beginning with the act of “projecting rays of light” reaching as far as the realm of hell, the “disciple” questioned about the reason behind. It was the fifteenth of the seventh month (Lunar calendar), the day of judgment for the dead. It was the day to determine whether one would reincarnate or fall into hell. The Master then answer the question, analyze, and show the disciple a solution to salvation.

4/ The only solution to bring salvation for the dead, the criminals of hell, and the hungry ghosts is to make offerings to the Taoist Priest and Temple. Isn’t it similar to the solution—making offerings to Buddhist monks—in Yulanpen?!

Dear disciples,

From the content to the layout of this “Marvelous scripture,” there are signs of superstitions against the Law of Cause and Effect. The only lesson from this sutra is the benefit of making “grand offerings” to the Taoist Priests and Temple, to rescue one’s grandparents, or ancestors, who are suffering in hell. This same intention appears in the very title of the scripture; “Huyền đô đại hiến” means to make a grand offering with all one’s sincerity and good intention, in seeking for mercy from Heaven, so their wishes will come true?! If these are the words of righteous, why is it anonymous? Someone might say those are the words of Yuanshi Tianzun (Primeval Lord of Heaven), but, unlike the Buddha, Yuanshi Tianzun is fictional, not historical. Besides, how did the authors record these teachings? Did they receive lessons from a fictional character? This scenario makes no sense! In Kutadanta Sutta, Collection of Long Discourses, the Buddha has stated, making offerings is incomparable to taking refuge, then keeping the five precepts.

From these accounts, this “Marvelous scripture” is indeed a disgusting piece of writing by schemers and spiritual traders, who offend and disguise as prominent figures and fabricate a whole fantasy to profiteer. They encourage readers to make the “grand offerings” with everything they own to Taoist priests. Likewise, in the Yulanpen sutra, the Buddha’s teachings to Moggallāna were also fabricated. Every year, in many temples and pagodas, the same tradition has been carried on; no one ever wonders about the nature of this sutra to realize its fatal loopholes. Yulanpen sutra will continue to poison a significant number of Buddhists, lessen their merits and lead them towards the lower realms. This is another evidence of the fact that, because of MONEY, the Chinese fake-monks are willing to elaborate deceptions by any mean. With this clear understanding, should we continue our support for these spiritual criminals as their accomplices?

I pray, may the sufferings of all sentient beings be pacified. May all sentient beings awake into the Enlightened state. Om Mani Padme Hum!
