Letter to Disciples No. 250: HOW TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN THE READER, FOLLOWER AND DISCIPLE? WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCE IN THE OUTCOMES OF THEIR MERIT AND BLESSING ACCUMULATION? (Thế nào gọi là bạn đọc, học trò, đệ tử? Kết quả tích tập công đức và phước báu như thế nào?)

Letter to Disciples No. 250:
HOW TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN THE READER, FOLLOWER AND DISCIPLE? WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCE IN THE OUTCOMES OF THEIR MERIT AND BLESSING ACCUMULATION?

Dear disciples!

A person wrote me a letter recently requesting to be my follower despite the fact that he has visited many sacred places in the Himalayas, even met the Panchen Lama in Tibet. Previously, another asked to be my disciple… . So what is the difference between a follower and a disciple? I will help you make  distinction between them as follows:

Guru was giving a sermon at Lotus Estrade

Firstly, those who read unlocked articles on chanhtuduy.com are called the reader because they have yet been given an account. After finishing the reading of 30 articles and writing of 30 or more comments, they will be provided with an account -a key to the Valimikirti castle to visit the Dharma garden. Now they are called the follower who will be then bestowed upon a Yoga’s name. After a certain period of time, may be short or long depending on the Guru’s decision and the followers’ petition, Guru Thinley Nguyen Thanh will select those who are deserved to be his disciples by a refuge ceremony. From then on, there exists a linkage between the Guru’s and Disciple’s spiritual destiny till the utmost enlightenment. The disciple should obey the first of the 24 Tantric vows which states that the disciple “Should not criticize (even show doubt) and disrepect the Guru”. The Guru, in the meantime, should maintain the 42th Bodhicitta vow, i.e “Take care of followers and disciples.”

Dear disciples

A reader, a follower and a disciple may get different outcomes from reading the same article

As you all know, spiritual activities regarding to reading and contemplating Buddhist sutras will help accumulate blessing and merit, much or less depending on each individual. In Song Nguyen Tantra House, through the reading of articles, readers not only understand the true nature of phenomena but also reap in blessing and merit. After finishing reading any article on Chanhtuduy.com, a reader shall create a positive karma; a follower shall get blessing; and a disicple shall gain merit. A positive karma refers to worldly results like job achievements, family happiness and high social status which come to him quickly or slowly depending on his endeavor in read-comment activity. Meanwhile, a blessing is a combination of positive karma and a cause of being reborn into human or deva realm after death. Merit is the result of both positive karma and blessing plus the state of joy and peace and a cause of being reborn into the Western Pure Land after death. You should know that a reader, a follower and a disciple will get different outcomes from reading the same article.

Dear disciples!

Following the 42th Bodhicitta vow, the Guru will permit the follower to rehearse one of six Dharma practices of Pure Mind Yoga initiated by Song Nguyen Tantra House. Disciples will be officially transmitted from two to six Dharma practices based on their “Spirit of Guru Devotion”. Chief disciples of Song Nguyen Tantra House will be transmitted the Application Bodhicitta Dharma in which they play as an assistant or a helper to make others comprehend and practice in alignment with the right orbit of Dharma.

Hence, you now may know your position based on the number of articles being read and commented so as to behave accordingly. Followers who have had Yoga’s name and account are permitted to contribute VND200,000 (around $10) per month to maintain the website (this is because Song Nguyen Tantra House is an administrative organization). Just a few words to let you know my aspiration and willingness, which you can find more in the Letter to Disciples No.80: A Few Words on Chanhtuduy.com (http://chanhtuduy.com/thu-gui-cac-tro-80-doi-dong-ve-chanhtuduy-com/) and (http://chanhtuduy.com/doi-dong-cam-niem-ve-ban-doc-chanhtuduy-com/; com/) and ( http://chanhtuduy.com/nam-moi-2018-doi-loi-dap-tu-ban-doc).

Below is one of the letters sent from a Buddhist enthusiast named Nguyen Thanh Xuan, a reader of Chanhtuduy.com, that I’d like to introduce to you…

Thanh Xuân Nguyễn <[email protected]com>

To me
Respected Guru,

My name is Nguyen Thanh Xuan. I was born in 1952 in Thai Binh Province. I am retired now. I can’t tell how touched I felt when I got a phone call from my son informing that you allowed me to write a letter asking for becoming your follower. It took me nearly a day to write this letter to let you know my thoughts and feelings. Pardon me if there is anything wrong in my letter.

Following Guru with Right – mindful steps

Before knowing the Guru, Song Nguyen Tantra House and chanhtuduy.com, I worked in the field of fishery in Thai Binh Province. Now I have retired and is the secretary of the Communist party cell in my hamlet. I have a good fortune to know chanhtuduy.com where for the first time I am able to penetrate into Buddhist teachings through your simple, clear, understandable articles and audio-sermons. All phenomena are analyzed in detail, concisely and scientifically. Just through the reading of public articles, I totally admire your wisdom. You show us how to connect life with Buddhist Dharma in the sense of “Dharma should attach to life. Life should be lessons of Dharma”. Let say an article of yours mentioning about the proposal of “Vietnamese script reform” by an Associate Professor and Doctor which has given me an insight of the nation’s education which needs a reform in pedagogical methods to inspire the learners rather than focusing on time and money costing changes of scripts or textbook content. Similar case is in Buddhism. The Buddha taught: “The practitioner should take wisdom as his sole cause”, i.e he should focus on nurturing wisdom rather than attaching much importance to vegetarian meals, life release (Tsethar), charity, sutra chanting, mantra recitation…

Through your sermons, I increasingly feel your compassion towards all sentient beings with each passing day. With pure and unconditional love to ignorant beings like us, Guru and your consort have spent much time, effort and money traveling from South to North for Dharma propagation. Your argumentative articles that help enlighten the beings lay a strong impression on me. You help me recognize evil doers in the bhikkhu’s robe who are seeking profit from the sincerity of Buddhist followers by covering their eyes with wrong views. I am delighted with your themes on votive paper burning, the destined star ritual for relieving people from bad luck, demonic possession, sorcerers, etc. They are helpful for readers in avoiding losing money just for worse result, even “inviting demon into their house”.

The letter written by Nguyen Thanh Xuan

How glad I am to have been able to connect to you simply through chanhtuduy.com. I am more delighted to see these articles having been translated into popular languages likes English, Russian, Chinese and Korean that help make their way to readers all over the world. This is a very new way of Buddhism popularization I’ve never found from other masters or bhikkhus before. By saying this, I don’t mean to “fawn on” you to be your follower because Mat Tan Giac has told me I should write from my genuine thoughts and feelings. A Guru with hundreds of followers in and outside the country is sagacious enough to  read their mind. This is not to mention that I may fall in disrespectful attitude towards the Guru that shall lead to loss of blessings by that behavior.

My wife and I have understood pretty much from reading and listening to your sermons. My wife (born in 1954) is also a Buddhist whose practices merely are chanting the sutras, going to pagodas and doing charity. She has yet grasped the true meaning of Buddha’s teachings and how to apply them into daily life.

Late until reading the article on “What is Tibetan Yoga?” with mantra recitation and 16 daily actions to generate Bodhicitta, do we have a real admiration at your wisdom and your invention on simple, applicable and easy-to-remember methods of practice. We can practice from the moment we wake up until we fall into sleep. This is particularly useful for the elderly like us.

Guru and his consort (Ms Mat Dieu) were singing one Dharma song

Let say before we sleep, we pray that all sentient beings achieved the dharmakaya; When we eat, we pray all sentient beings use food of meditation; When we drink, we pray all sentient beings drink the nectar of Dharma; When we are happy, we pray all sentient beings achieve the happiness of Buddha’s nature, etc. All these actions remind us of the being and our aspiration for them to get enlightenment. I also understand that these practices become fruitful only when you give us permission.

We have read and obtain benefits from your articles and we are grateful for that. I wish to keep following your footstep to learn and understand rightfully and accordingly act in the right orbit of Dharma. This is both beneficial to us and others.

My wife and I have gone through many afflictions in this life, thus we aspire to find and take refuge on the Guru and the Trinity from which we will become a true Buddhist who can help ourselves and other beings to get rid of sufferings caused by ignorance and wrong views.

It would be my great honor if you allow me to become your disciple and to learn Dharma to gain equanimity and peace right in this life and ultimate bliss next life.

I truly pray for you and your consort to live long for the benefit of all sentient beings.
May all sentient beings achieve the happiness of Buddha’s nature.

OM MA NI PAD ME HUM.

Your follower, Nguyen Thanh Xuan, would like to stop here. May I ask my son to send my letter to you since I am not so skillful in working with email on mobile phone. May you allow me to  phone you, if possible?

Dear my reader, Nguyen Thanh Xuan,

Guru and disciples

I am joyful with your sincere and profound sharing. I hope you will become my follower and disciple in the future. Your spiritual queries are all answered above so please act in accordance with my teachings. You should read articles I’ve introduced to you to learn more about my aspiration. May you be diligent in read-comment activity to get fast progress on the path of Dharma learning.

A rainy afternoon on the peak of Phu Van Mountain

    Dear Guru,

I have read this article already. According to this letter, I understand the difference among readers, followers and disciples of Song Nguyen Tantra House. That is they will get different outcomes from reading the same article. Readers will have family happiness, job achievement and higher social status as a reward. Followers will attain not only the same outcomes as readers but also a chance to reborn into higher realms such as human or deva. For disciples, they both gain blessings and merit that bring happiness to their present lives and the lives after death at Amitabha’s pure land – The Land of Ultimate Bliss.

Thank you so much for your profound teaching.

May you and your consort live long for the mission of protecting dharma.

May all sentient beings be surrounded by The Three Jewels.

    Om Mani Padme Hum.

    Buddha is my life

    Dharma is my way

    Sangha is my Spirit.

Respected Guruji, I bow my head at the lotus feet of Guruji.

    I am Tantra Nirvadeva.

I am delighted to read this sufficiently lengthy and more descriptive article which is self explanatory.!

It is evident that any amount of ‘ praise’ or

‘ influence ” will have a neutral feedback. OnthOn contrary, Guruji  knows , decides, and judges when to attribute one as a Reader, or follower or disciple at the right time depending upon one’s Dharma Practices.!

The relationship of Guru and disciple is interdependent.! There will be no Guru with out disciples . And no disciple with out a Guru.!.Guruj  repeatedly stresses not only in this article but in majority of articles in Chanhtuduy.com , ” the disciple should not criticize (even show doubt) and disrespect the Guru and also obey the 24 Tantric vows.Guruji will appreciate, ” the spirit of Guru devotion”. Last but not the least is it is the obligatory duty of a Guru ” to take care of followers and disciples  too.”

    Om Mani Padme Hum.

Long live our beloved Guruji for upholding Dharma.

    Dear holy guru,

I now understand the difference between readers, followers, and disciples. May all of your readers become disciples may i be a disciple may we all continue to learn from you and not just learn from you but put into practice what we learn. I must be lacking in my practice because I’m struggling in life but i will continue to try putting good karma or to the world so others do not suffer as i did. Thank you for teaching me and having patience with me. I appreciate your dedication and live for Buddhism and your disciples. May all sentient beings find the way to enlightenment. Om Mani padme hum

  7. Dear holy Guru,

Thank you so much for your clear and deep explanation about the differences of readers, followers and disciples on chanhtuduy.com. And by reading your clarification, I bear in mind the different blessing got from readers, followers and disciples in response to the same spiritual activities like reading and commenting on chanhtuduy.com, meditation on Bodhicitta and so on.

Your teachings draw the clear steps for us to go on the path of liberation. We ourselves know clearly which steps we are in and we should practice diligently to get the progress on the Path. In addition, your article also affirms that we reap what we sow. Your teachings lead us to an increase in the need of the diligence for the progress on the path to enlightenment.

I highly appreciate your noble efforts to help us and all sentient beings go on the path to enlightenment.

May you and your consort have a good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.

I also rejoice with the good deeds of Mat Hue Phap who translated your article into English. Her translation supports to spread your articles all over the world in order to help all sentient beings have a good chance to access the light of the Dharma.

May Mat Hue Phap get the legitimate wishes and get joyful on the path to enlightenment.

May all sentient beings achieve the happiness of Buddha’s nature.

    Om Mani Padme Hum.

  9. Mật Thủy says:

    Dear Holy Guru,
Thank you for your article showing us who and how to be a reader, a follower or a disciple. This is really helpful for those who wants to be a follower and then a disciple of Guru to go on the path to liberation. This article also gave us the awareness of different outcomes from reading the same article of different position: readers, followers or disciples, then readers have more encouragement to make effort to be a follower and a disciple. By that way we all utilize our reading and commenting on chanhtuduy.com for gaining the best thing: “merit”, which along with wisdom are our luggage for death.
I’m delighted with the letter of the reader Nguyen Thanh Xuan, which help us to be more happy with our position as a disciple of Guru and to nourish our Guru devotion.
I’m also delighted with the translation by Mat Hue Phap.
May Guru and your consort have good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.
    Om mani padme hum!

Guru teachings have transformed life’s of many disciples who truly follow Guru’s instructions and teaching.

May Guru live long and protected and get enlightened.

To be a reader, to be a follower, to be a disciple, as a novice one in the concept of Buddhism and a toddler in chanhtuduy, I am so grateful.for being a part and to be touched by the words of wisdom the holy Guru. I know my self that I’ve been guided and clothed by blessings that makes me walk in a path of righteousness. From being grown up to a culture that I am not sure of, to a concept that cast me a peaceful way of thinking. It makes my life more understandable and clearly now.
