Letter No. 262 to disciples: WHAT IS YOGA NAME? (Pháp danh là gì?)

Letter No. 262 to disciples: What is Yoga name?

Today, on 16th July 2018, as usual, I make a list of the readers on chanhtuduy.com. Those who have commented 30 articles up will become the learners and will be granted a log-in account to walk through the garden of dharma flowers, enjoying 2,000 blooming flowers with different colors and fragrance. As I have written in the previous articles, in which I mentioned that the new Yoga name does not replace your existing dharma name you have got, this Yoga name is just a supplement to enable you to practice the renunciation in Buddhism.

Why so? Because the Dharma name or Yoga name is the new name bestowed by the Guru, it means that from that time onwards, you have become a member of the bodhi relatives with the Buddhas and Holy Saints in ten directions. In addition to rise the divine pride, you also create the conditioned reflex when you often read or write your Yoga name, becoming a means to get liberation in bardos if you proclaim your Yoga name in time.

On the other hand, proclaiming the dharma name is the first lesson on renunciation for those who wish to learn Buddhism and gradually leave the samsara relatives and become different from the worldly people. If the monks in Buddhism are called “Thich – Sakya ” in Vietnamese.., our laymen Buddhists should get the Yoga name with Tantra in English or Mat in Vietnamese. Take me as an example, you should not call me by my secular name Nguyen Huu Lot, the director of Thanh Tri Insitute for Psychology Research and Yoga applications, the director of Centre for research, practice and application of Tibetan Yoga or the chairman of Unesco club for research and application of Tibettan Yoga, but you should call me Guru Thinley Nguyen Thanh.

I call you by your Yoga name and I write your Yoga name in my every article. I never call you by your secular name. It is a means to create the convenient environment for you to always think about practicing the Dharma. So do you! You should not use secular names when communicating with together such as: Tuyet, Hieu, Quynh, Nam, Hung, Thang and so so.. , instead you should use Yoga names while being in conversation like Mat Hong Tuyen, Mat Tu, Mat Nhi Khang, Mat Tan Khai and so on. The learners who come to chanhtuduy.com ahead of other call the one later coming as “younger brother” and vice versa. The word “Chief brother” is used for a “elder brother” who instructs other younger brothers of a Tantra House in a place nation-wide or foreign countries. Take an example of Mat Dieu Hang is the chief brother of Song Nguyen Tantra House in Hanoi No.2

Dear disciple,

Where did the dharma name come from? From the ancient time in China, the first person in Chinese Buddhism history who used dharma name “Thich – Sakya ” was Dao An (312-385), a prominent monk in the East Jin Dynasty. Throughout his life, he only wished to spread the Dharma, his disciples were thousands. He bestowed upon them the dharma name beginning with the word of “Thich – Sakya” because they consider themselves the eldest son of the Tathagata (Thich tu – Buddhist), so his dharma name was Thich Dao An.

In Vietnam, there are many monks who praised, glorified the position of monks and supporting the above explanation of Thich Dao An with the argument from Mahaprajna Paramita sutra it goes: “Non – Sramana, non- monk”. The words in the sutra is right but later the monks equate the word “Sramana” as monk, it is a way of changing the concept resulting in the misconception so that all people later understand this concept as the advantage of the monk, enhance the prestige of the monk community and  “subdued” or look down on the laymen Buddhists or lay practitioners and creating the inequality in evaluating the results of practicing the dharma in contrast to the teaching of Matreya as follows: “only right effort is the supreme quality to get enlightenment,” whoever monks or lay practitioners you are. Let’s see the bright example of the head of Tibetan Buddhism, The Guru Rinpoche – Padmasambhava, we will find the answer.

ITA’s Director – Master Thinley Nguyen Thanh in Latvia

By the way, I would like to make clarification about this issue as follows:

1, Sramana is the monk who rooted out sufferings and free from Samsara.

2, Depending on his own background, each Sramana practices his own methods based on the Buddha’s teachings and Saints’ guidance to get the fruit of Sramana (like Arhat, Samma Sambuddha, vijjàcaranasampanno and so on)

3, The monks are those who has left home and live a monastic life, practice and live in accordance with the holy life of Sramana.

4, In short, Sramana is the fruit, monk is the cause.

If an ex- monk quoted the words from Prajñāpāramitāhṛdaya doctrine as an arguments, I see it as one-sided argument. Because the noun or name of “Sramana” or “monk” is only “The prajna of hearing or reading”, not belonging to “the prajna of contemplation” or “the prajna of realization”. If they cling to the script, how can they explain the cases in which lay Buddhists obtained the enlightenment such as  Vimalakirti in Buddha’s time and later Mahasiddha Marpa?

Regarding Dao An’s point of view, it shows the unequality because the Lord Buddha taught that: “ I am a Buddha, you will be a Buddha”. Therefore, the name of “Buddhists, Monks or the eldest son of Buddha” are nothing to say, are not worthy of clinging to such names.

After all, who deserves to be a Buddha disciple, the eldest son of the Buddha, must count on their virtues, not basing on their names. Because so many Buddhists deeply bear in mind about the name and form with “evil thoughts”, the monks count on “their bald”, “their ropes”, “degrees”, “large temples” “big gates”, “raising children to feed their life” to “be there just to make up the member”. From the beginning of 2016 to the end of 2017, the press has unmasked many cases of Buddhist monks who stained the holy reputation of temples, which leads the situation of that “one scabby sheep is enough to spoil the whole flock” and Song Nguyen Tantra House has “pointed out their faults and correct them under the Buddhist proofs” to benefit all beings, to protect the reputation of monks and Sramana. With such bad examples shown up, whether the monks with dharma name beginning “Thich – Sakya ” are worthy of being called “ the eldest son of Buddha”? And for the lay Buddhists who practice diligently, keep precepts seriously, support to develop the Buddha- dharma and spread Buddhist teachings all over the world, is it right they are not the son of Buddha because they do not have the dharma name beginning “Thich – Sakya”?

Dear disciples,

Now I would like to explain what the “dharma name” is. Dharma means the model or pattern, the name is the call. Dharma name is “the name for the pattern to practice”. It is common and specialized. In the martial arts, according to the pattern of practice, they make their own name for their sect such as Shaolin Kung Fu, Wudang Sect, Kūnlún, Vovinam, Nam Huynh Dao and the learners are called “disciples”, the teacher is called “the coach” in term of degree, and “the martial arts master” belongs to academic rank.

In terms of spirituality, Catholicism and some other religions put the mane for followers called “holy names”, such as Maria Quynh Tram, Phe ro Hoang Minh Tam and so on. Our Song Nguyen Tantra House, Thanh Tri Institute for Psychology Research and Yoga Applications operates under the pattern of spiritual proven science based on Buddhist wisdom, so the learners and members will have the Yoga name. Being different from others, we always respect our Yoga name because Yoga name is one among 6 means to liberate in bardos, a means to practice renunciation, one among the three principal aspects of the path to enlightenment affirmed by the enlightened ones. I would like to write such above heartfelt words, you should follow my words. I pray all sentient beings achieve the the Buddha-nature happiness in which the first step to get is to receive the Yoga name. I congratulate the learners who have received the Yoga name today, on 16th July 2018.

    Revered Gurujee

I bow my head before you

    OmMani Padme Hum

It is a very interesting and informative article. I am happy to read it for simple two reasons.

    1. Our family is growing fast and

    2. I too am having a yoga name.

But above all the information that it presents is more interesting. The reason is simple. It one the one hand makes us know the chronology of name giving system on the other provides an explanation of the name giving. As shakyas are  considered as the brothers of the Buddha who are elder and considered elevated one.

I am thankful to our Guru for the. Nice explanation of the name giving process as the yoga name bears an importance both for the Buddhist brotherhood as well as the person bearing the nsmen

  7. Elana Dower says:

  16. Dear Holy Guru

I have special joy in learning this lesson. Thank you for helping me get clearer understanding of the teaching in Mahaprajna Paramita Sutra : “No sramana, no disciple of Shakyamuni (or Shi)” based on which Thich Dao An (道安; C: dàoān) in China and some monks in Vietnam have intended to highlight the position of the monastic sangha while belittling lay Buddhists.

In fact, all ten (10) principal disciples of the Buddha like Sariputra, Mahakasyapa, Upali, or Ananda did not bring the Dharma surname “Shi” (釋). Just when Buddhism was propagated in the Eastern Jin Dynasty (China), did Dàoān initiate the putting of “Shi” as the Dharma surname of the monk. Nonetheless, the “Shi” itself means the elimination of afflictions that is similar to the word “sramana” which describes a bhikkhu who is free from defilements and afflictions. The Dharmapada sutra (translated by Monk Narada Mahathera, Colombo, Sri Lanka, 1962) points out the nature and criteria of being a sramana or bhikkhu as follows:

    “Not by mere eloquence,
    nor by handsome appearance,
    does a man become good-natured,
    should he be jealous, selfish,
    and deceitful.” — 262

“He who wholly subdues evil deeds
    both small and great
    is called a monk
because he has overcome all evil”. — 265

“He is not thereby a bhikkhu
    merely because he begs from others;
by following the whole code (of morality)
one certainly becomes a bhikkhu and
not (merely) by such begging”. – 266

Your teachings proven by the sutra give me a good comprehension of the true meaning of the word “Sramana” as well as the surname “Shi”. It’s not the way of relying on the “prajna written word” without understanding the true nature of the phenomena and objects, just like we are relying on the words, not on the meaning. The quote “No sramana, no disciple of Shakyamuni (or Shi)”, on the contrary, should be understood in the aspects of “Prajna contemplation” or “Prajna realization”, in which “sramana” is a bhikkhu who has escaped from defilements and afflictions. The word “bhikkhu” meanwhile can be defined in two ways: 1. A person who lives a Buddhist monastic life. 2. A person who always maintain the precepts. From these points on, those who are in the robe of a bhikkhu but do not keep bhikkhu precepts “are not the disciple of Shakyamuni”. Then this “Shi” surname is simply a word, no more no less. But anyone, even the lay Buddhist, who takes the precepts seriously by revolving his body, speech and mind around the Dharma axis will surely be “the disciple of the Shakyamuni”. That’s why Matreya affirmed that “Only right effort is the supreme quality to get enlightenment”. This has nothing in relation to apperance, titles or academic decree of him.

I also thank you for reasoning the meaning of Dharma name which is one of six means to get liberation in the bardo and a means of practicing Renunciation, one of three principal factors of enlightenment as affirmed by the enlightened ones. I have now been aware of the inconceivable importance of the Buddhist nomenclature.

I am so excited to know that 20 new readers have been bestowed Dharma names from you, marking a fresh new beginning on the path to the City of Liberation. Having a Dharma name means to hold a “golden key” to open the gate of an enormous “Buddhist garden” with over 2,000 articles and audio sermons. May them continue to uphold the fire of diligence and follow your footsteps from now till the ultimate enlightenment. Thanks vajra brother Mat Dieu Hang for your wonderful translation.

May you and your consort live long for the benefit and happiness of all sentient beings

May Mat Dieu Hang keep up your good work and fulfill all legitimate wishes.

May all sentient beings achieve the happiness of the Buddha’s nature.

  17. Dear Holy Guru,
I highly appreciate your wonderful article: “what is yoga name?”. Thank you so much for your nice explanation the true and noble meaning of “yoga name”. I am so proud of proclaiming my yoga name because I have known that it is yoga name which helps me connect the bodhi relatives and abandon the suffering of samsara relatives. It is so important for practitioners to declare in bardo for  the rebirth in Pure Land.

In addition, you make clarification about the difference of sramana and monks or other disciples of the Lord Buddha. Your clear explanation shows the equality in Buddhism in which the Buddha affirmed that ” I am a Buddha, you will be a Buddha”, the spiritual right of a Buddhist is the same no mater whoever  monks or lay Buddhists you are. If practitioners practice diligently and act in accordance with the holy text to get the two factor including wisdom and compassion, they are sure to get enlightenment. Buddhist wisdom does not belong to any people or any countries. It is for all sentient beings. Those who master the Buddhist wisdom and benefit the all sentient beings are worthy of being respect and worship.
You always create the dharma environment for us from the day we are honor to be bestowed the noble yoga name by the Holy Guru through calling our yoga name. I have never met any monks or other dharma teachers who call their followers by their dharma names, they never remember the dharma names of their disciples let alone understand their disciples’ own circumstance to help them overcome all difficulties on the path of enlightenment.
I find so lucky and blessed to meet you and being guided by you on the path to enlightenment. You always teach us how to live in accordance with the Buddha’s teachings, keeping mindful in every action of body, speech and mind, observing all actions to go the right track on the path to liberation.
I would like to express my deep gratitude to you for your precious lesson I have learnt from your teaching in this article.
May you and your consort have a good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.
May all sentient beings achieve the happiness of Buddha’s nature.
    Om Mani Padme Hum.

  18. Dear Holy Guru,

I’m so grateful to read your teaching about the noble meanings of Yoga name through this letter.

That’s such a blissful moment for all of us, learners and members of ITA Institute, when we’re honor to be bestowed Yoga name by the holy Guru. From that time, with Yoga name, a mean of practicing renunciation, we have become members of bodhi relatives with the Buddha and Holy Saints in ten directions, we have gotten the chances to create the conditioned reflex for utilising Yoga name as a mean to get liberation in bardos when we proclaim our Yoga names in time. Thanks to your thorough clarification about the misconception in true meaning of the word “sramana”, which was equated to monk as a way of changing the concept led to the overestimated position for monks meanwhile underestimate the ability of Buddhist laymen in practicing the Dharma, I understand much more about the equality in the teaching “I am a Buddha, you will be a Buddha” from the Lord Buddha. I’m so proud of my Yoga name, I enjoy the divine pride of being one of lay practitioners under your guidance on the right way to the enlightenment.

Thank you so much, Holy Guru. May you and your consort have a good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.

I would like to congratulate ten readers who have just been bestowed Yoga name.

I’m delighted with this translation of chief brother Mat Dieu Hang. May all your legitimate wishes come true.

May all sentient beings achieve the happiness of Buddha’s nature.

The following quotes  in this article  have highly impressed me :

    1. ” Only the highest effort is the supreme quality to get Enlightenment whoever monks or lay Practicioners they may be.”

    2.  ” Shraman  is the Fruit and the monk is the root. ” !

    3. Lord Buddha taught, ” I am a Buddha, you will be a Buddha.” !

    4. ” The word ‘ Buddha ‘  is derived from one’s virtuous Qualities, not  basing on their names, ”

    5.  ” One scabby sheep is enough to spoil the whole flock.! Monks or shramans  should  therefore be vigilant and careful to protect the reputation of monks and shramans.!
