Letter No.259 to disciples: BUYING SOME LITCHIS, THINK OF THE THIRD PERSON DIFFICULT TO MEET IN LIFE WITH DEPRESSION (Mua trái vải mà buồn lòng nhắc lại hạng người khó gặp thứ 3)

Letter No. 259 to disciples: Buying some litchis,  think of the third person difficult to meet in life with depression

Dear disciples,

This morning of 10th June 2018 at 10:00, we stopped at No. 16, at Ngo Gia Tu – Nguyen Trai crossroads, to have a breakfast with Hue-style beef vermicelli.  Then we came to Ring Café at 16th April park,  Phan Rang City. The only thing is that the Hue-style beef vermicelli I have ordered was that I cannot find the taste of Hue-style. Just the spicy taste that turns my tongue senseless with others foods. But the other beverages with caffeine are quite good and tasty. It is one among the 4 cafés which I have enjoyed in the park.  Others were in Ngai Giao,  Ba Ria- Vung Tau city, one in Tam Ky city, Quang Nam province and now one in Phan Rang city,  Ninh Thuan province. Bars,  pubs or café which are located in the park, near the large roads, are absolutely advantageous. I would say that the main factor to get successful in business is the quality of preparation.

Café at Phan Rang city

the vendor selling litchis

Looking back, I was saddened to see vendors using old bicycle moving all around in every places of the city earning little for their products. Sometimes, I just buy their products to help them, even if I know that their items are not that good as what as those being sold in the market or in established stores.  Like this morning, Mat Phero and I were waiting for a car to ride in when we saw a woman having in a bike loaded with litchis. She asked Mat Phero to buy some but he refused to. I told him to buy some as a way of helping the vendor.

I remember one time, when I and my disciples came to Mat Phero’s house in Ninh Son, Phan Rang City, he wanted to make offerings to me. But his hard status came out of my mind, so I refused to accept anything at any once. Though, I really appreciate his heartfelt devotion. He was so sad knowing that he got no chance of giving money as an offering to me. Instead, I asked him to buy a litchis for me and for some other Dharma friends. He was so eager to buy a 2.5 kg of litchis. The vendor immediately weighed the fruits, got the money, and expressed gratitude to Mat Phero for buying the litchis. But she never said a word to me though she’s known that I was the one who asked Mat Phero to buy her fruits. I am not in a point to make anyone be thankful for some things that I do or obliged to give their gratification for things that I have done, but it seems that she missed to think of where the cause of the effect came in. She only thanked the one who bought her item and hand over her the money and that made me think of some individuals who only give appreciation to the tips and forget to give value to the root. If the root  is poisonous, then how can you think that the tip is well enough? Even if the tip looks good and fresh, how sure could it be that they can avoid to be harmed?

I asked Mat Phero to buy some litchis for the vendor

Dear Disciples,

Based on the story of the litchis vendor, it reminds me of one time last year about a lottery ticket seller, who only thanked Mat Dieu alone, though he knew I was the one who asked Mat Dieu to buy from him. I can relate that to a common situation in life. It is somewhat like the situation in holy door wherein it happened in  Buddhists who have wrong view that they do not understand the four big gratitudes. They settle their attention in superficial appearances and deviate in comments or judgments. When they see the abbot building the stupas for worshipping the dead, the first thing that they have in mind is that the abbot has a great compassion with all sentient beings. There was one time when the charity boxes were stolen from the temple. The abbot felt a deep grief but he kept all in secrets and never made a sign for others to know his real thoughts.  He pretended to say that he did not care such money. Charity box stolen is good because others could spend such money instead him. When the Buddhists in the temple found out what really happened, they praised him and even seem like to consider him as the hero of renunciation, much even better than Uballi. The Abbot maintained the flag of requiem, appeasing by means of magic incantations, even some rituals to appease for the dead fetus. Contrary to the Buddhist spirits that  “the spiritual self-reliance to practice the dharma will gets support of pure energy from the Pure land”. Yet, Buddhists gave him the generous appreciation that he had the Boddhicita to do such wrong views of activities. In fact, Buddhism has been considered as the path to liberation, focusing to great wisdoms. Then why should they give attention to other means just to equate themselves to pagan and non-Buddhism?

At Mat Phero’s house

I and my consort at Lan Anh Hotel in Ninh Chu

Lastly, there are many people chanting sutras for many years, making generous offerings, printing and giving thousands of books, but they still fall into the case as what I have mentioned in the article on chanhtuduy.com “making more activities relating to giving gets less merit”. You all should remember that blessings are quickly eradicated by the impact of objective circumstances and of harmful effects from the five poisons (greed, hatred, ignorance, jealousy and pride). Merit is the spiritual fruit of liberal labor that non Buddhism cannot attain. However, Buddhist practitioners can only collect the merit through the first five paramitas, but without the paramita of wisdom, their merit can easily be vanished like the image of the flowers fading easily by the wind in winter. This is the case of that Buddhist practitioners who are not provided with the right views (including right view in worship, right view in reverence, right view in viewpoints, right view in liberation).  In short, due to the lack of right thoughts, they can’t handle the cases that need to be examine in the four aspects of the precepts (including closing, opening, keeping and violating). The clear demonstrations of these people, even if they are monks or lay Buddhists, are to worship Guan Gong and the God of wealth (for those who do trading) If the god of wealth really has the exerting power, why is it that the Vietnamese people are still poor? They are Buddhists,  I wonder why they still worship wandering spirits on the 16th and 2nd (someone still considers such kind of wrong view activities as the action of compassion) Some Buddhists cultivate the normal wish to get the blessings to be reborn in human or god realms. Some chant the sutra for the dead people for the goal of getting some bottles of cooking oil or some bags of sugar. They always chose the good day to get married, yet, why the rate of divorce is increasing every year?

Lan Anh Hotel, next to Ninh Chu beach

Dear disciples,

Song Nguyen Tantra House is the pure place for me and my consort to practice the dharma. It is also the office of Thanh Tri Institute of Psychology Research and Yoga Applications. We do not worship Guan Gong, the god of wealth, mother of five elements, etc. Then why do we developed so quickly? Comparing to the situation last year when I came to this place, this time, we are enjoying everything here more comfortably. We stayed in Lan Anh Hotel, next to thebeach. Then we are all accessible to go swimming with satisfaction. We also enjoyed the food in some wonderful restaurants. But the last time I came here, I haven’t had the chance to enjoy them. Earlier, we stopped at Thanh Thanh Hotel – Café for lunch break and our eyes could see so many amazing landscapes. We enjoy the tasty food with cheap price at right Phan Thiet city. It is more fun compared to last year. Everyone had an audible gasps with the wonderful fruits of Song Nguyen Tantra House after a short time to practice the right path to liberation.

Café at Phan Rang city

Spiritual path as being proven by science is completely different with religious belief. Which means to say that I and you are different from the monks who live in the temple and only chant sutras with bells, sitting in meditation at the main room of the temple; or the professed lay Buddhists who cultivated for 20 or 30 years but they understand nothing about right view. Knowing some Chinese words, they use them to show off, but when you and me, write some words for refutations, they keep silent like turtle’s neck. Then they tell another story with the conspiracy of “passing the buck”. I have mentioned in the article “misconception in worldly life and Dharma” section 1, which points out that the surface of their problems are as follows:

Coffee shop at Phan Rang city

“In fact, there are a lot of different misconceptions in life. For example, a wife is successful in trading, earn a lot of money, then she will be loved by the members of her husband’s family. Then everyone thinks that her husband is so lucky. But it is the husband who feels the grief of the shame caused by the situation of “living off his wife’s money.” Many people cannot understand his situation and wish to have same kind of a wife.  However, they do not know that “only the wearer knows where the shoe pinches.”

Stop at Khanh Khanh hotel – restaurant and café for lunch

Another case is the intellectual husband who is a scholar, whose knowledge has been admired by many people. His words are sweet and he has good behavior in social communication. But many don’t understand that the wife is suffering in silence because of his charisma, greediness and “no time for family but being always available for others “. Some don’t understand that the main thing for a relationship of husband and wife is available moment for each other to secure happiness.

At Khanh Khanh hotel – restaurant and café

Another case is a woman who had been consistently going to the temple every night to chant and been living as a vegetarian. Everyone around thinks that she is living a peaceful life with good children. Until one day, when a dharma friend dropped by to invite her to go for a charity. The dharma friend was surprised to hear the woman cursing her husband. The neighbors suggested to the husband to just leave home and stay in a monastery for cultivation. But after a while, he went home because he could not stand the monasterial life. Then their first born son is not getting well with his mother. He wishes to stay out from home too and rent an apartment to avoid the conflicts and tension within their home.

Ninh Chu beach, Phan Rang city

The woman actually has 50 rooms for rent in Vung Tau City. It has been believed that this is due to her blessing on her early life. Then her husband died which tends her to go the temple every night for chanting to overcome her loneliness. Her tenants, those who are renting her apartment, are complaining for her system of increasing the rent every 2 months, despite of the contract that has been made that there will be no increase for renting until 6 months. Each time she makes an increase, she’s been reasoning out a lot to justify her bad behavior.

The cases mentioned above have specific addresses, and I myself have seen it with my own eyes. However, these misconceptions are just on the secular side, the consequences will affect only one life. However, if the misconception about the Buddhist scriptures happening, then they based it on their own misunderstanding in practicing the dharma. The consequences will affect many on the next lives. This has been recommended by the Buddha in many sutras, including the Mahaparinirvana Nirvana, the Shurangama.

My consort is driving in the journey.

The manifestation of these misconceptions fall in the case of that people who cling only to the appearances and forget the nature of phenomena. Any sutras that are being listed on THE GREAT RIGHT SUTRAS are considered as the right dharma with no exemptions. Buddhists have believed blindly in such sutras to practice for many years and they never wonder whether these sutras are uttered from Buddha or not? Whether the person mentioned in the list has virtue and wisdom to be a holy one or not? Because of the attitude of “spiritual slavery”, they blindly follow the ignorant traditions of that the long term Buddhists have been cultivated for a long time. Their relationships have become towering trees casting such long shadows or following everything in temple without thinking, following what monks tell them and “obey their words”.

I am standing among 3 cars of Song Nguyen Tantra House.

Foreseeing that there are some evil monks in Sangha who teach the Buddha scriptures but do evil actions of body, speech and mind, so the Buddha taught in the Mahaparinibbana sutra, nature of Tathagata chapter, as follows: If  Buddhists learned that a monk breaks the precepts, they should not bow onto him, let alone making offerings eventhough he wears the robes. Why?  Because Buddhism always focuses on reality, especially Mahayana and Vajayrana, Therefore, the Buddhist should live in accordance with Buddha’s teachings. Why do we have to follow the monks’ words if we have known with clear evidence that he has sexual immorality with women,  or cheating on the billions of his benefactors?

Supposed there were a famous Buddhist scholar, who translated many sutras, wrote a lot of books, but he helped the publisher give a trick to manipulate the script,  keeping the script with the wish for personal gain,  do we believe that he is a true Buddhist? Or should we think that he is the son of a demon.  You should remember that the only one to distinguish the difference between Buddha and evil, is that evils that are in the case of “doing as I say, not as I do”.  Buddha means that learning and actions are hand in hand. The Buddhist knowledge is right thoughts to apply Buddha’s teaching into the bodhicitta path for liberation. Evil knowledge is wrong view, and they use a trick for personal gain, though they know that their actions are on contrary to the right view.” unquote.

Dear disciples,

I am happy for the beautiful success of Song Nguyen Tantra House.

I am happy for all of us. I am happy for the beautiful success of Song Nguyen Tantra House due to the countless merit we have collected so far.  What is the secret to get successful? It is very simple. It is “being grateful and then return the favor” to the right objects in the right trace of the dharma as the Tibetan proverb: “never get poison even from the hand of parents. Never refuse gold even from the hand of enemy.” From this basis, Buddha considered that the one who learns how to be grateful and return the favor, should be respected as much as the two persons whom we rarely meet in life, including: (1) Buddha,  Bodhisattva and Saints,  (2) Buddhists who make lecture in accordance with the holy scriptures and Precepts.

I pray all sentient beings pervade the rain of blessings from The Three Jewels and stay firm fighting wrong view, evil doers no matter who they are.

Om Mani Padme Hum

Respected Guruji, I bow my head at your lotus feet.

Guruji’s  frequent  beech side trips shows that he is an ardent lover of seeing amazing landscapes and Natural scenes and detivide peace of mind by looking at the tranquility and generosity of the sea and its beautiful surroundings !

I am also impressed by the Bodhicitta of Guruji the litches  fruits from the vendor on the road only to help her though the quality of the fruits are not so good and upto the satisfaction.!

The quote appeared in this article,” Making more activities relating to giving gets less merit” is  most appealing and that is nothing but exhibition of Egoism and such persons  we commonly see now a days.!

Guruji  condemns unscientific beliefs and faith and says people choose the good days to get married ,yet, why the rate of divorce is increasing every year ?. Guru and his consort do not worship the god of wealth etc. and says then why do we developed so quickly in Song Nguyen Tantra House.?

Guruji stresses that  Buddhists should live in accordance with  Buddha’s teachings. Why do we have to follow the monk’s words if we have known with clear evidence that he is an immoral and a big cheater ?

Last but not least, I liked the Tibetan proverb, ” Never get poison even from the hands of parents. Never refuse gold even from the hands of enemy.” !

  11. Elana Dower says:

    Dearest Guru,

I am writing this with tears in my eyes because your words express so eloquently what I have been thinking about for so long. I have known and know now so many people who are just as you describe. The father you describe is much like my own; to the world he was a scholar and someone to be admired, but his nature was evil and he did not show compassion and deliberately did cruel things. The landlady you describe is much like my own she claims to be spiritual and loving but she is a narcissist and even raises the rent when she should not! I have a friend who has studied to teach yoga and wears Om symbols and Mala beads and has an earthy style to her clothing. I admired her until we talked more and more and I realized that it is an act. She wants the world to see her as a buddhist-like spiritual person but she does not know the purpose of the mala beads, she did not know the significance and meaning of Om. She does not practice buddhism or have an understanding of it. She adopted it as a style nothing more or it is superficial.  When we talked more about her life she quickly showed anger and resentment telling her story as a victim of her own life. In many conversations I have tried gently to touch on suffering, joy and taking responsibility for our own lives but she was unable to listen, I think she was upset with me for challenging her. I find many people are this way, they only want to be enabled to stay stuck in their bad cycle and if they are encouraged to try something different like growing, finding peace they become angry and scared and close up.

Guru, how do we encounter such people and not internalize their feelings. I feel so often that I am very sensitive to what others do and say in relation to all beings. When I hear a friend tell yet another story of something bad inter life and they have no intention to change it upsets me. When I hear a friend say something against another group of people (prejudice) it hurts me deeply because I believe we are all deserving to be in this world good or bad our karma brought us here and we should not discriminate or deny other people the right to feel, speak, live or be protected under laws. What is happening now in my country the US is heartbreaking. Our president and his administration are treating people of color as if they are not human and there are many people here who agree and love what he is doing. People who are crossing the border are being treated inhumanely. And he wants us to believe he is a great man when his actions grown from a seed of evil within.

Guru I want to have the strength to experience such people and keep my peace within. My dharma friend says do not think of them once the encounter is over. Do not let them stay in my mind. This can be very difficult for me. Your teachings are giving me new strength and clarity thank you.

    Dear Holy Guru,

I have read your letter No. 259.

The Buddha once taught his disciples that those who with depression are difficult to meet in our life. And many situations have proved that his teaching is true until now. The vendor with a bike loaded with litchis is an example. She only thanked the one who bought her products and hand over her money, but missed to think of where the cause of the effect came in.

From the above story, you lead us to the reason why Song Nguyen Tantra House develope so quickly. It is very simple that is “being grateful and then return the favor” to the right objects in the right trace of the dharma.

Thank you so much for your beneficial lesson through the letter.

I am delighted with Mat Phero devotion towards the Guru.

  19. Dear holy Guru,

I would like to express the deep gratitude for your nice article. I have learnt where is the root to repay the gratitude on the path to enlightenment.

The cases to thank the wrong person are common now because they only pay attention to the appearance or their own gain with the short-sightedness. They do not know that if the root is not good,  how the tips can be grown well with sweet fruits. Then focussing on tips only,  they later or sooner get in vain.

Thanks to your teachings,  you give me a good chance to open my eyes and understand the nature of everything,  especially the gratitude and repay the gratitude towards the right person.

Thank you so much for your nice lesson.

May you and your consort have a good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.

May all sentient beings attain the happiness of Buddha’s nature.

    Om Mani Padme Hum.

dear holy guru. Thank you very much for your wise article. I was very touched by this article. This article shows us how important the daily holy Dharma is. If we do good for others and practice the bodhicitta then we too will have good karma and be successful in the path of enlightenment. If we are grateful for the smallest gifts others give us and we also like to share then we also practice the Dharma. Even if we can not give materially then we can give a smile. A smile and positive thoughts should always accompany our actions. Each one of us may realize how blessed we are. It is important that we follow the Dharma for the benefit of all. So we can go the way of liberation. the Dharma is our highest good and we can trust the knowledge of our holy guru. May our holy Guru life long for the sake of all sentient beings. May all beings achieve the happiness of Buddha s nature. OM MANI PADME HUM

  22. Dear Holy Guru,

I am so delighted to read your letter no 259 Disciples buying litchis, think of the third person difficult to meet in life with depression. I have not only seen so many beautiful pictures during your trip but also learnt the lesson about “being grateful and then return the favor” to the right objects in the right trace of the dharma. It is also the secret reason Song Nguyen Tantra get successful quickly with countless merits. Buddha stated that should respect the one who learns how to be grateful and return the favor as much as (1) Buddha, Bodhisattva and Saints, (2) Buddhists who make lecture in accordance with the holy scriptures and Precepts.

Thank you so much for giving us the beneficial lesson which we can consider and adjust ourselves to the right trace of dharma.

Thanks to Mat Dieu Hang for translation this meaningful article to English language in order to help English speaking disciples a chance to learn Guru’s lesson.

May Guru and your consort have good health, live long for the sake of all sentience beings.

May all sentient beings achieve the happiness of Buddha’s nature.

    Revered Gurujee

    I’m Mani Padme Hum

I bow my head before you

I am grateful to you for sharing this lesson

This lesson spots light on the going of the mundane world where we work under

ignorance and under the spell of greed hatred and delusion that blinds and results in our short sightedness . This is the reason that the vendor thanked Mat Phero the abbot pretended generous even after being stolen the charity box from all the temples.

In the same way we all worldly people are suffering of the merits accumulated by our ignorance based wrong deeds . Even the so called spiritual teachers are befooling the people and in turn themselves by their hypocrisy  . The Buddha has categorically asked to follow the right knowledge (Samma ditthithi) . This is the first step of Buddhist Astanga Yoga  This will lead to the Nibbana the highest goal of life. For that we must adhere to the Buddha ‘ s path . All the hypocrisy will mislead us and lead to suffer here and here after. We may obtain short time pleasure by the hypocrite behavior but finally it will lead to dark , dismal and disparate situation

May all sentient beings live in happy state

    Dear guru

Life is a flow of events, experiences and moments that teach us, nourish our practice and elevate us. Sometimes the going gets tough and then we need to strengthen the way we approach life and look beyond the surface.

Dharma guides all beings to rise above the mundane

May all beings benefit from dharma
