Keep yourself away from “Give and get –ism”

Dear Holy Guru,

I am happy so much and I would like to express my deep gratitude to you for giving me the favorable opportunity to read articles and comment as the method of practicing the Dharma on This practicing helps my mind clarify and from that my life is more peaceful than ever before. As a human being, no one is perfect, we always experience  the inescapable hardships no matter where we live or which circumstances we are in. So we should overcome all such difficulties and get the balanced mind to move on. I myself have got the blessing from Yidam through Guru who guides me  how to transform the inescapable hardships of life into aids for progress on the path. I am deeply grateful for your kindness and compassion.

I wish for my better life and my future work is good. All my wishes will come true. I am preparing to graduate and I applied for a job in a German hospital. I will invite my family members to come to Germany for the family reunion if I have a good life here.

Since reading articles on, my mind has been changed. I avoid ignorance, desires. I have a wish for a better life but I do not have much expectation with the result on my wish. I understand clearly that it is my effort that will meet with success if I get the blessing from Guru and Yidam.

I have read articles on and diligently practice the dharma daily. My knowledge on Buddhism is a little sketchy, so I need to read and comment more diligently to enrich my knowledge.

I am so overjoyed with the dharma name Mat Cat Xuyen you bestow on me. I am so sad and feel sorry that I could not come back Vietnam to take part in the international dharma conference due to my examination in Germany at the same days with the conference held in Vietnam. I hope that I have another good chance to take part in another dharma conference or Guru has permission for me to take refuge in the Three Jewel from distance.

Also I would like to make offering with the little amount of money to Song Nguyen Tantra House. Guru guides me how to transfer 500 Euro by bank, please. My small money is only a little contribution to Song Nguyen Tantra House, but I wish Song Nguyen Tantra House to get more development all over the world. And all sentient beings can get benefit from connecting with Guru.

May Guru have a good health and live long for the sake of all sentient beings.

May all sentient beings be in peace and happy.

Dear Mat Cat Xuyen,

I am delighted to get your email sent to me from Germany, in which you wrote about your spiritual progress when you enjoy the flower garden of In  your present curcumstance, you should read and comments articles on It is considered as the method of “Samyagdrsti-Prabha Samadhi”. You now should read and comments as an intern (not practice). I pray that your legitimate wishes come true if you do not have any worldly attachments and your wishes are based on compassion and are guided by wisdom (please listen to the sermon “Do not get tips but forget roots”)

I as well make clear that there was not the ritual of taking refuge in the Three Jewels in the dharma conference Lunar New Year 2018, and refuge in the Three Jewels is considered the first condition for every practitioner to enter the holy door of Yoga for mind purification. Although I said to you that I will make the ritual of taking refuge in the Three Jewels from distance, this way only applies for the special cases. In every dharma conference, disciples and learners are happy to make offering of pure money and materials towards Guru in accordance with the Buddha’s teaching, spirit of cherishing the dharma and with the dharma regulation of Song Nguyen Tantra House. Today, you would like to make offering with 500 Euro. You make wrong if you make offering to “bargain” with taking refuge. Song Nguyen Tantra House is never governed by money. You make wrong if you make offering 500 Euro for expressing the gratitude to Song Nguyen Tantra House because Song Nguyen Tantra House is not the right object for you to make offering. You are also wrong if you would like to make offering to Guru so that you pray for that your affairs of life will be successful as you have written in your email. You are wrong if you make a pure offering to Guru because Guru teaches you to understand the nature of the life and from that your mind is transformed. Why? Since you have met difficulties in earing for life. You have not held a steady job. Your final examination to graduate has not had the result yet. I wonder if you can get a job in the Germany hospital or not. You should not be wilful. You should not be supertitious basing on “give -and- get-ism”. Consequently, I do not accept your offering with finance and you should keep your money for your daily expense. In Vietnam, I live such a prosperous life that I live freely in my pure world and have no idea to cling to anything, why should I give the money with unclear intention and target under misinterpretation between phenomena and nature.

Dear disciples,

Once so was the case of Mat Dieu Tam from Australia. Mat Dieu Tam would like to make offering to Guru because she was afraid of not passing the final examination to graduate. I did not accept her offering because of her impure intention. This was the main reason she lost the merit due to her spiritual calculatingand then she had to leave Song Nguyen Tantra House. From now on, you should make offering towards Guru with heartfelt pure mind, right thought and right speech for request to offering in order that you avoid losing merit due to the impure offering. Every authentic Guru does not want to receive any offering made by the disciples or learners who have the culculating with impure mind and misinterpretation in request. I pray all sentient beings have sense of shame and humility. Om Mani Padme Hum.

  3. Respected Guru,

    I’ve read the letter of Mat Cat Xuyen and your teachings to him and us as well. I am so thankful for your straight pointing at our common mistake in offering activity. Offering is one of ten spiritual activities in Buddhism which gathers merit to the practitioner. This action becomes meaningful and gets good results only by being done with “pure mind, right thought and right speech”, not by acting out of self-interest or mediocre “give-get” thought.

    In the Flower Ornament Sutra, the Buddha taught that the result a practitioner gets from offering of goods varies in proportional to the level of his pure mind. It is his pure mind that plays a decisive role. That’s why Master Avagosha said:

    “Let speak true words to your Guru
    Offer him with various kinds of goods and from your sincerity
    Because there’s no distinction between the Buddha and the Guru”

    Your timely warning has helped us to look back at our bad thoughts during offering activities and readjust and push them back to the right orbit of Dharma.

    May fellow brothers and myself are always fully aware and mindful in practicing offering to the Guru. Thanks again for these precious advices.

    May you and your consort live long for the sake of sentient beings
    May all sentient beings always keep mindfulness in the state of wakening

    Two contrast examples of instances of “offerings” (Dana) we come across during the study of this article which is one of the prime factors of six Perfections in BUDDHISM and also one of the rules of Song Nguyen Tantra House.!

    In the first instance, a German disciple  Mat Cat Xuyen is willing to offer 500 Euro to Guruji as a little contribution to Song Nguyen Tantra House wishing Song Nguyen Tantra House to get more Development all over the world and all sentient beings can get benefit from connecting with Guru( with Bodhicitta) seeking Guruji’s blessings. It is left to Guruji’s decision to accept it or not.

    As contrast to the above, In the second

    instance,  Mat Deu Tam, an Australian disciple would like to make o gracefferings to Guru because she was afraid of not passing the final examination to Graduation!(intentional &conditional) which amounts to impure offering.!

    In both the cases, Guruji did not accept the Offerings, being well- off personally by the grace of Buddha.

    By this, what Guruji gives a message to the disciples is  there should not be ‘ bargain’ of ‘ give and take’ while doing Spiritual offerings!. The offerings should be pure and Unconditional. Get away from the” -ism ” of ” give and take”.!. This is also one of the fundamental rules of the Song Nguyen Tantra House.

    I have read this article already. You once taught us that offering is one of the activities in Buddhism that generates merits to practitioner. However, this must be done with a pure mind towards the Guru who is the main channel to transport blessings from wonderful land of Yidam. With impure purpose like “give and get-ism” there would be no benefits at all. Therefore it is better to cultivate offering activity in the right way as Guru has shown.

    Thank you for indicating our hidden mistakes in offering activity. May all your disciples and readers know the way to offer purely in order that they receive merits on the path to iberation and get blessings from enlightened ones.

    May you and your consort live long for the sake of all sentient beings.

    May all sentient beings be surrounded by the Three Jewels.

    I am so thankful to learn about “Keep away give get-ism”. Thank you for pointing straight to our common mistake in offering. The offering should be done with pure mind, right thought and right speech. If doing offering with impure purpose, it would not be any benefit as well as losing merit.

    May you and your consort good health and long live for the sake of all sentient beings.

    May all sentient beings achieve the happiness of Buddha’s nature

    This is a very eye opener conversation between the Guru and his devoted disciple wherein it has categorically been expressed that there is no space for the monetary offerings in devotion or holy pursuits.  Normally in almost every religion money is acceptable. People are encouraged for more and more offerings.  Thus the religious persons have  converted holy pursuits into a business.  This has caused loss of its sanctity of religion. Buddha has also forbidden such practice and declared it unholy.  This wrong practice gives birth to a business culture in religion.  Today most of the temples have become rich and devotees have developed  fatalistic tendencies.  For any trivial achievements they try to bribe God and persuade him for favour. This will make the people idle.  Buddha categorically says ” Tumhe hi kiccam  aatappo  akkhataro tathagata” You will  have to endeavour yourself Tathagata is simply a guide.

    I am delighted to know that Guru has returned the offerings and thus procured the the karm theory that is the backbone of all the religions.

      Con hiểu được nhiều điều khi đọc bài viết của Thầy hồi đáp sự thỉnh nguyện cúng dường từ một học trò của Thầy. Con hiểu rằng Thầy không nhận cúng dường tịnh tài với sự tính toán trong tâm linh.

      Thông thường, các tôn giáo khác, các vị thầy luôn nhận cúng dường của tín đồ. Thậm chí nhiều nơi còn khuyến khích tín đồ cúng dường càng nhiều càng tốt. Do vậy, những vị ấy biến các hoạt động tâm linh thành một ngành kinh doanh để trục lợi cho bản thân. Điều này làm mất đi ý nghĩa thiêng liêng cao cả. Đức Phật đã cấm những hành vi tà vạy sau cửa thiền và điều này cũng viết trong kinh điển. Chính những hành vi tà kiến đó đã tạo ra văn hóa kinh doanh trong tâm linh. Ngày nay, hầu hết các chùa, đền thờ đều trở nên giàu có và các tín đồ thì lao vào văn hóa kinh doanh trong tâm linh bằng những việc cúng dường gây tổn phước. Để đáp ứng cho những mong cầu tầm thường thế gian, họ cố gắng hối lộ chúa trời và cầu nguyện sự ban phước của chúa trời, thần linh. Và điều  này làm cho con người trở nên lười biếng, trì trệ, không chịu lao động, chỉ lo đi cầu cúng. Đức Phật đã dạy: “Ta chỉ là người dẫn đường, các ông cấn nỗ lực hành pháp”

      Con hoan hỷ tán thán công hạnh của Thầy đã không nhận cúng dường bất tịnh và dạy cho chúng con một bài học nhân quả quý báu trong việc cúng dường. Vì nhân quả là điều quan trọng đối với hành giả.
